2009 California Old Vine Zinfandel
Aromas of red raspberry, sweet leather, and rich Lodi soil open up on the nose, with a hint of silky, spicy Mexican chocolate. On the palate, our 2009 Old Vine Zinfandel is full of warm spice and wild strawberry flavors, with layers of brambly raspberry, cinnamon bark, and clove. The complex blend of fruit and spice is well-balanced by this wine’s refreshing, bright acidity, the hallmark of a classic, food-friendly style Zinfandel. Striking out from today’s overblown, high-alcohol Zinfandels, this wine shows true varietal character with restrained alcohol, finishing with lingering fresh cranberry notes.
Winemaker Greg Kitchens blended a small lot of Petite Sirah with this wine to deepen the fruit flavors and add a touch of tannin, making this Zinfandel even more food-friendly. Pair this wine with St. Louis style brown sugar BBQ ribs and honey mustard cole slaw, or try it with a grilled pork loin stuffed with stewed cherries.
